In his New York City warehouse/office, Mr. Mishkin provided Mr. Bilbrew with a room in which he lived and worked. It's likely that was his residence when inking illustrations for The Slaves .

We acquired this publication because we had never heard of it or seen it in a catalog or price list. With a color cover that boasts “INSIDE: 24 MORE BILBREW DRAWINGS!” we inferred that it must be worthwhile.

The page size is larger than that of Mutrix booklets. And it has 88 pages rather than the typical 64.

Like some other Mutrix pieces, the text originated in England. Mr. Leggott's story combines lots of sex with whippings and bondage, in the context of a Parisian school for girls.

The title misleads. This isn't a story about slaves. It should be called something like “Diabolical Headmistress.” Mlle. Verrier uses her authority at the academy to manipulate her students into situations that enable her to whip them, which turn out to be the best parts of her day. She's a simple sadist, who whips, orchestrates and participates in sex, and supervises punishments without much fanfare. Although judgmental and autocratic, she's too busy enjoying herself hurting people to engage in the rituals and formalities of a typical fictional domina.

The main character is Jim, brother of Susan, an English student at the academy, who tells him about the kinky hijinx of the principal. He's aroused when he hears that Valerie received a bare-bottom spanking. Soon after, he frolics in his sister's bed.

When Lisa and Valerie visit during summer vacation, she proposes a re-enactment of the whipping she received. When Jim appears for the show, he finds that roles are reversed: Valerie plays Mlle. Verrier, Jim plays Valerie. But the night ends with plenty of sex for all.

At the school, Jim presents himself as Susan's uncle. Mlle. Verrier recruits him to have sex with Francoise to catch her inflagrante delecto, contriving a pretext for punishment.

Returning to the bedroom, he found her lying on the bed. He got onto the bed at her side and began kissing and fondling her. He was in the middle of a long French kiss when the door burst open and in walked Mlle. Verrier, who locked the door behind her.

"So, Francoise! This is the sort of thing you are up to, and with a much older man, at that! It is disgraceful, and I shall punish you severely!" she said, as the girl shuddered at her words.

"I am to blame as much as she, Mlle. Verrier," Jim said gallantly.

"Nonsense!" shouted Mlle. Verrier. "I am quite sure she got you up to it. No one can blame a man if a girl offers her body. I'm very sorry to interrupt you like this. I think it would only be appropriate if I allowed you to have your satisfaction before I punish her. I'm going to punish her very severely."

And then she walked over to the girl and told her to kneel on the bed along its length. When the girl got into that position, Mlle. Verrier got up on the bed, stood for a moment with her feet on either side of her, then sat on the small of the girl's back. She pulled back Francoise's underskirt and looked at the teen's buttocks, then turned to Jim and said, "Take your trousers down, young man, and take her!"

Jim could hardly believe her words. But he did as he was told. He soon was kneeling facing the girl's buttocks. Mlle. Verrier's smile revealed the excitement such a situation was providing her . . . .

To Jim's surprise, Mlle. Verrier hit the girl with the palm of her hand time after time, shouting abuse in the most obscene language as she did so.

When Mlle. Verrier finally recovered her composure, she got up from the bed and spoke to Jim: "Thank you, Monsieur, for performing the act so well. Now we know what kind of whore she is, and I am therefore in a proper legal position to punish her." Then she told the girl that the next day would see her receiving her full punishment, and she asked Jim if he could be present to witness it. Jim accepted the invitation.

Punishment implements include chains, ropes, whips, canes, darts and electric probes. The application of these devices are shuffled between sexual interludes. It's bdsm fantasy about people who do objectionable things.

The text describes emotions and sensations, often using superlatives. The author describes attire worn by women and features of their bodies.

The text was re-set for the ebook iteration. Few changes were made to the fast-moving, easy-to-read story. About 14,000 words.

Mr. Bilbrew inked 24 pictures to illuminate the spicy narrative in the style of his work for other Mutrix publications. His graceful curves delineate pretty female forms in panties, garter belts, ornate hosiery and heels.

Some scenes do not appear in illustrations. Most pictures coincide with a scene in the story. Illustrations are optimized to align images and narrative. Optimized pictures include virtual enlargements that show fetish and figure features. But some pictures are omitted from the text version because they do not depict an incident in the story.

A second pictures-only ebook presents all optimized pictures on 70 pages.

Brightness, contrast and levels were adjusted. Shadows were reduced to expose waves of hair, drape of fabrics, transparency and floral lace. The optimized ebooks offer a convenient mechanism for enjoying Mr. Bilbrew's enduring artistry.
