Satana, Volume 1, Number 6

Published at irregular intervals during the 1960s, Satana implied content it seldom contained. This issue consists of photographs of pinup models and exotic dancers. While many stockings and garter belts are shown, not all the heels are high. The best heels are shown in photos that accompany letters. Pictorials of Pat Ebden, Tara, Marie Bari, Lisa Reed, Laura Vickers, and Nicki Miller.

Unlike so many other Selbee products, this issue of the full-sized Satana has good photography and production. A short story is introduced by a full-page Eric Stanton illustration. One article contains many promotional photographs of the movie The Balcony, and another, The Bare Facts, was written by Carlson Wade.

The ebook contains every word and picture of the original, including a rotated color centerfold, letters (with photos) and ads. The sequence of a few pages has been changed to achieve continuity of text pieces and photo sets. Many page layouts have been revised to obtain larger pictures of the models.

The photographs reproduced well. Retouching and tone adjustments improve on the print version.

bonus material

We've added 18 pages from Satana, Volume 1, Number, 2 (1962) to the digital replica. The supplement includes two short stories, introduced by Stanton illustrations, a beautifully drawn, two-page episode of Stanton's "Satana" comic serial, letters with photos a full-page cartoon, and a photo of Betty Page.

Satana, Volume 1, Number 6, optimized

Each of the pictures in the original Satana 6 magazine and bonus material has been placed on its own page in the optimized ebook version. This format fills the monitor screen from top to bottom, presenting pictures, not pages, and is intended reduce the need for scrolling and zooming.

Eric Stanton illustrations work well in this format. Most of the photos have smooth gray tones in this context but a few of the very smallest pictures are a bit grainy when enlarged for optimized ebook pages. No text.

The result is a unique pinup album of more than 180 pages, designed to anticipate the curiosity of the viewer.

Submission in Satin, C-10

Selbee Associates published the Connoisseur Series from the late 1950 to the early 1960s. The content spanned several themes and often consisted of photographs without text.

While many Selbee covers mislead and misinform, Submission in Satin lives up to its cover. With good photography by Sam Menning and conscientious production, it is certainly among the best of the best of Mr. Burtman's publishing and photo orchestrations during his tenure in New York.

Without words, Submission in Satin, C-10, tells the dress-up story of three models: Jackie Miller, Anita Ventura, and a petite blond – let's call her Sue. When Sue fastens a corset around Jackie, Anita decides that she wants to wear a corset, too. Still dressed in her own tight satin corset and high-heeled pumps, Sue helps Anita into her corset and attaches garter straps to stocking tops.

Then, the bossy brunettes decide they are going out and have Sue, who changes into high-heeled mules, lace up shiny, knee-high boots. After leaving in leather and satin sheath dresses, Sue discovers an interesting pair of white ankle boots and a black patent corset.

While the setting for the photo shoot was an apartment living room, this is a boudoir scenario and Sue functions as a lady's maid. We are shown three leggy lovelies in various stages of dishabille, involving stockings, tight corsets, bras, panties, garter belts and assorted hosiery.

The optimized ebook version shows multiple views of most photographs, with enlargements of legs, heels and corsets. The wide ebook pages fill rectangular screens. This format reduces the need for scrolling and zooming.
