After Leonard Burtman discontinued publication of his now legendary, digest-sized Exotique magazine in 1959, he introduced Satana, Bizarre Life, Leg Show, Corporal, Three, Stocking Parade, and others, including High Heels magazine. His 1960’s publications had more and larger pages and good photography.


The digital replica ebook contains all 72 pages. It is of interest to Selbee/Burtman fans because its contents comprise no part of any anthology. One of Mr. Burtman’s most important contributions to the art and history of lifestyle publishing was his continuous presentation of the works of Eric Stanton. This issue contains a four-panel page of the “Savage Sisters” serial and full page short story illustrations by the Maestro. Mr. Stanton is listed as art director on the title page.

This issue is filled with photos of pretty models in stockings, garter belts and high-heeled footwear, including, mules, sling-backs, sandals, and pumps. Heel height varies from three inches to five inches.


All pictures in the digital replica show clearly. Tonality of photos has been adjusted and specks retouched. Some page layouts have been revised to obtain larger pictures of the models. Edges have been trimmed and empty margins reduced.

Before digital processes, photographs were shot by big cameras in print shops and a dot pattern, sometimes called benday, was imposed on the image. In so doing, the varied, continuous gray tones of the original photo were translated to a patterned set of dots of many sizes. A picture consisting of dots on the printing plate allows for discrete delivery of ink to paper. This permits the color of the paper appear in the visible image on the printed page.


Many of the pictorials in High Heels, Volume 2, Number 4, consist of photographs that were prepared for stripping into a flat (the assembled “negative” through which light passes to expose the offset plate). In addition to this standard method of magazine page assembly, this issue of High Heels also consists of photographic images that were appropriated from other magazines. Those images contain the benday pattern from their first appearance in print along with a second benday pattern that was added when those magazine pictures were made ready to appear in High Heels, Volume 2, Number 4.


Due to the application of two benday screens to some of the photos in the magazine, the printed images have lots of grain. Of the 110+ pictures in the optimized ebook, about 20 are grainy.
