Black Garter, Suave Edition
Possibly to avoid conflict with postal authorities, Black Garter wasn't sold by subscription. Synmag didn't date or assign volume numbers to issues of its magazines. Instead, each was given a name. What makes this issue of Black Garter Suave (or Continental as stated on page 2) isn't clear. The Suave Edition collects pictures of some of the best known pinup models working in New York City at the time.

When a garter or garter strap wakes up in the morning, he knows where he's headed: Thighsville. That's where the work is done, holding stockings in place on creamy thighs and shapely legs. To its credit, most of the pictures in Suave Edition show women in garter belts and full-fashioned or RHT nylons. Tana Louise only appears on the cover.

While the title refers to gams, a lot of prose and pictures focus on bustlines. Text adjacent to photographs purports to be written by photographers (one female), who express appreciation for their beauteous subjects. Commentary advises about creative approaches to figure photography, lighting, posing and praising.

Multi-page photo features spotlight Honey Bee, Virginia Rogers, and Pat Vincent. Pretty, perky Dee Carroll flirts with the camera in an excellent set near the bar in Mr. Burtman's penthouse. Jennifer Jordon (not Jennifer Jordan/Jutka Goz), stripper Irma the Body, Rita DeCastro, Willa Caruthers, White Fury, and Carole Wynters also show off.

Page style reflects an interest in modern graphics of the 1960s, with asymmetry, deliberate misalignment, superfluous arrows, borders, bars, and many regions of black. Except for covers, all pages are monochrome. While some page margins have been reduced, the ambitious graphic style is obvious in the ebook. Dee Carroll centerfold pages were spliced and appear at the end of the ebook.

The digital replica includes all content of the 52-page magazine, including advertising for Calypso music on phonograph records. Some page layouts were revised. Tonality of photographs was adjusted and specks re-touched. Page sequence has not been modified.

Amazed and amused by the irresistible appeal of pretty women and the vulnerability it exposes in men, the magazine draws its audience into the circle of its personnel and their artistry. The cheesecake of the original appears cool and tasty in the digital iteration.

Femmes on Burlesque, No. 4
In the early 1960s, uncertainty about local censorship concerned adult publishers, and many worked their daring territories with some caution. In this issue of Femmes on Burlesque, hand-inked pasties obscure nipples in the cover photo.

On the inside, a disclaimer explains that the intent of all this toplessness is the creation of a guide for professional artists, photographers and models that will help them pursue their art. Information about camera, film and settings follows.

The flesh and substance of its content are photographs of Ms. Wright, posed in her own dark hair and two blond wigs. At first glance, the array seems like two models, but careful inspection discloses multiple visions of one zoftig charmer.

Most pictures show her in garter belt and stockings. A few show bra and panties. She appears in an apartment, in front of shelves holding books and 12-inch LPs. A Westinghouse tube TV peeks over her shoulder in a couple of shots.

The digital replica includes all content of the 36-page booklet in the original sequence. One photo per page yields an ebook with large pictures. Tonality of photographs was adjusted and specks re-touched.
All new scans.

The residential setting and her apparent openness to adventure invite speculation about possibilities between the sophisticated lady in deshabille and an attentive admirer.
