Ultra, 1, 1
Ultra was a fetish universe parallel to that of Exotique. Like Exotique, the contents of Ultra includes photos of models and female wrestlers, short stories, articles and a comic serial by Gene Bilbrew. Both digest-sized magazines showed illustrations by Eric Stanton. The Ultra cover announces " Wrestling Gals . . . Bizarre Fads . . . Exotic Fashions."

With its many pages of prose, Ultra may have been a bit more literary than Mr. Burtman's book. Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's nineteenth century novel, Venus in Furs, gave the world the word masochism. Fiction by him in this volume fills 14 pages.

If you think you have seen every Gene Bilbrew illustration he ever made, think again. One of strong charms of this volume is Mr. Bilbrew's superb ink work on five pages of the comic serial "Mat Girls," and on the covers. Signing his pictures "Savage", Mr. Stanton's contributions appear on two pages.

Photos and drawings show women in corsets, stockings, pumps, boots, gloves and lingerie. But what distinguishes the premiere issue of Ultra from other fetish magazines is the proliferation of photos of women in formal wrestling attire, twisting each other on canvas.

Fran attempts to rescue her sweetheart, Jan, who Norma has captured. Quick, smart, mean and strong, Norma out-wrestles the would-be liberator and painfully binds the lesbians to each other. The story is told in the first person, by Fran.

A few photographs show two women in bras and panties, struggling on a mattress. The small volume has 10 optimized pictures from “Mat Girls.” Mr. Bilbrew's lovely work benefits from careful inspection.
