This issue of Trojan has eight pictorials, two short stories and two articles. 1960's Parliament models offered a more substantial silhouette than the 21st century ideal. And these curvaceous pinups posed without tattoos or piercings. Although 59 years old, the high quality clay-coated paper showed no sign of yellowing when pages were scanned.

Satyr of the Squared Circle — article
by Russ Gordon

Illustrated with photographs, the essay recounts the era and exploits of boxer Jack Johnson.

He was respected as the greatest fighter of all time, by the very men who hated him for his immoral, lewd life outside the ring, and he fought the battle of integration long before there were any organized efforts to integrate the races. But to Jack Johnson, this was simply a personal battle, fought for Jack Johnson alone, because he believed he was the equal, if not the superior of any man, in whatever field.

Johnson was condemned, as a fighter, to meeting only the Negro fighters of his day, not only because of the "color line" that had been established by John L. Sullivan, but because it was early evident that this fighting machine was just about invincible. He has been called — and rightly so — a rake, seducer, lecherous rebel, cheat, fornicator, jail-dodger, pur juror, race-riot instigator. But the one title no one disputed was "fighter." And he was a fighter out of the ring as well as in, for what he believed to be his rights.

One night in 1923, Jack Johnson walked into a Klu Klux Klan meeting in Danville, Illinois, and in the glare of a burning cross, lectured the hate-mongers on love, humility,
and the Golden Rule. And he walked out, proud, and unopposed. So add one more attribute to this phenomenal man: guts.

He was the first Negro to hold the heavyweight title, and while he was the heavyweight king, from 1908 to 1915, his activities indirectly caused the death of 19 persons in race riots; he married three white women of all those he played around with. One of them became an alcoholic, one an outcast, one killed herself, and a promoter of a stage revue starring Johnson shot and killed himself over his losses.

No one from the levee country dared try integration, or even equal treatment, until Johnson came along. The colored fighter was exploited almost as bears and bulls were, and was openly told what fights to win or lose. But in 1908, Johnson knocked out Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia, and broke the color barrier with such a loud detonation that Arch Moore was later to say: "He hurt my chances for years." Joe Louis says: "When I was coming up, in '34 and '35, they didn't forget old Jack. I had to live like a saint to get a break."
