wink-pic1.pngIn the 1940s and 1950s, Robert Harrison published "girlie" magazines on pulp paper with titles like Beauty Parade, Flirt, Wink, Titter, and Eyeful. The models included chorus girls, strippers and burlesque entertainers, with text and comic images frequently referring to “Broadway.” The original layouts were often like burlesque presentations, with an accent on jokes and gags, often involving puns. Some of the layouts included comedians in baggy pants.

Many of the the pictorials were given alliterative titles, and one of these, “Fancy Femmes”, provides the title of our ebook. With this expression, the magazine describes women who enjoy dressing in stockings, garter belts, corsets, lacy undergarments and the highest of heels. Although the Harrison product is fairly remembered for its pinup focus, each issue served generous helpings of models in extra-high heels and old-fashioned corsets and stockings through the 1940s and well in the 1950s.

The anthology collects photographs of the prettiest models in high (4½+ inch) heels, with some as high as 6 inches, and arranges them on wide, optimized ebook pages. As the original magazine pages were larger than those of other magazines, the ebook pages for this volume are substantially larger those of other optimized ebooks. On 130 pages, models show off their pinup-quality legs in spikes, stockings and a few spectacular corsets.

Except for the splendid Peter Driben cover paintings, all photos are monochrome.

A few nostalgic pages follow the photo section, including letters to the editor and a pictorial on burlesque dancer Blaze Starr. Finally, many pages of advertising for remedies, rubber masks, movies. drawing aids, denture repair, slide rules, insurance, social clubs, lingerie, and hair restoration products. One ad by Irving Klaw but many by other publishers offer novelty, self-help, photo and fiction publications. The reader was encouraged to buy training programs to learn hypnotism, how to be a detective, improve his physique, lose weight, gain weight, ju jitsu, piano tuning, auto mechanics, radio repair, and find faith.
