The first issue of the full-sized High Heels magazine was published in 1961 or 1962. As the twelfth issue appears in 1969, this “quarterly” doesn’t achieve its self-described frequency during the first volume. Consolidated Publishing may have been a partnership between Mr. Burtman and Gordon McCausland, a Canadian erotica publisher. His Gordon Publishing company re-packaged some of Mr. Burtman’s Epic non-fiction titles by Dr. Podolsky and Carlson Wade after 1965. In the early 1970s, Mr. McCausland vanished.
Number 12 focuses on boots with five-inch heels. Rena Brown wears black patent, knee-high boots with laces. Darlene Morrow, the yummiest of the lot with long, perfectly-curving thighs and legs, is laced into two-tone boots and also models excellent pumps. Eve Davies, a slender poser who seems to be aware of her own beauty, wears the same boots. In the black patent boots of the cover girl, Helga Beck is also seen in garter belt and stockings. Then, statuesque Monique Deveraux models, nude, except for the same boots. The setting for three of these booted lovelies is an apartment, identified by the wallpaper and boudoir dressing table that serve as backgrounds for the models. Ms. Morrow shows off her goodies in Mr. Burtman’s Manhattan penthouse.
Dominique and Vera Novak appear in pumps, stockings and garter belt. Also in pumps and stockings are a bevy of “Paris Dolls,” photographed by Roland Carré.
Each introduced by a Gene Bilbrew illustration signed Van Rod, two anonymous short stories provide fine details of footwear and exotic attire. In the first, a strong-willed women uses the fetishistic needs of a man to dominate and use him as a household servant. In the second of these, a wife recruits her husband’s mistress for a punishment ritual that humiliates the errant spouse.
In the digital replica, the sequence of pages appears as in the original 64-page magazine. Some of the page layouts were revised to obtain larger images of the models. Some of the wall, floors and furniture were cropped out to accomplish this. Tonality of photographs was adjusted, specks and blemishes re-touched. The result is a digital presentation that provides a viewing experience that is clearly superior to that of the original paper version.
High Heels 12, optimized for ebook viewing
Each of the photos and illustrations is placed on a wide ebook page proportioned to fill the horizontal space framed by Acrobat Reader on monitor screens. The nearly complete image is sized to fill the screen from top to bottom. Some of the walls, floors and furniture have been cropped out of pictures to obtain maximum presentation of models. As many of the pictures are small, this technique is probably the best way to enjoy all the precious details in the original material. The result is a 110+ page pinup album, designed to reduce the need for zooming and scrolling.
