For those intrigued by the glitter-glamor of 1950s nightclubs, Cabaret magazine offered pictures and prose that approached the subject from many directions. Most of the pictures were taken by professional photographers working for news services, which means that the images are clear. Their photography is supplemented by performer publicity photos, also good.
The September 1956 issue has informative articles on personalities, potables, places and practices. Topics include bourbon, the world's rawest burlesque show (at the Shanghai Theatre in old Havana), how to run a nightclub (in Colorado), Belgian chanteuse Monique Van Vooren, Bill Haley's rock n roll, and June Harlow's first-person account of how she began stripping at the age of 16. With pictures and prose, one article describes elite New York nighteries El Morocco and the Stork Club, and compares the personalities of their owners and patrons.
A coast-to-coast night life guide provides short descriptions of venues in San Francisco, Baltimore, Las Vegas, New York, Washington, Boston, Detroit, and Chicago. Two columns summarize notable acts and attempt a few jokes. Cartoons fill up space on many pages.
Although there are no ads, some of the prose deliberately publicizes restaurants and other hot spots.
