ART & Photography, Volume 8, Number 5-89
In the 1950s, when photography required chemicals, hobbyists often focused on women. ART & Photography embraced that interest with about half of its photographs showing women's bodies and pin-up poses. Any magazine that includes the words “World Filled with Glamor Girls” and a picture of Mitzi Gaynor on its cover obviously feels its likely audience is straight men.
Articles tell about photography in Japan, how to make money with your camera, a profile of fashion photographer Hal Reiff, and the nude in art. A photo-illustrated piece about the daring designs of Bill Hughes shows his innovative darkroom prints, which remove mid-tones and yield a picture that looks more like an illustration than a photograph. His pictures appeared on jazz album and book covers. Now, the solarization technique can be done by anyone with an image editing program. No darkroom or chemicals required.
The array of Mitzi Gaynor pictures shows us that she's aware of the appeal of those dancing legs. A photographer who shot her at the Paramount studio tells about her poise and professionalism in his article about the experience he had with her.
Other articles tell about slides, stereo photography and short product reviews. Interesting advertising for Nikon, Canon and Minolta cameras.
The ebook contains all 52 pages in the original sequence. Due to low resolution and the decision to save the scans as .jpg files, many pictures show grain and patterns. Despite shortcomings, the ebook brings us back to a time when art justified nudity and photo processing could only be accomplished in the dark.
Pin-Up Summer Special (incomplete)
Many of the friendly models in Pin-Up Summer Special wear bathing suits and some pictures seem to be posed near outdoor water. Others are seen in stockings, shoes with three- and four- inch heels and lingerie. One corset.
The digital replica shows excellent skin tones in most pictures but some pages are missing. It's included in this product to show British pin-up styles of the 1950s. An extra, the price of this product reflects the value of one ebook.
Models include Lee Sothern, Tina Gay, June Garden, and Sabrina (of Satan in High Heels fame). Little nudity but many flirty smiles invite enjoyment of graceful curves and yummy cheesecake. More than 50 pictures.
